Punjab, the land of five rivers and integrated cultural history, is a treasure trove for an avid traveler. Every monument in Punjab, be it a gurudwara or majestic palaces of Patiala and Quila Mubarak display its magnificence. Harimandir Sahib, popularly known as Golden Temple was Guru Ramdas Jee’s legacy to Sikhism. The dome of the temple made of pure gold stands out in the holy environs. The excavations at Dholbaha, the ancient temple town at Hoshiarpur, date back to the Pleistocene period of Stone Age. The museum containing these relics is situated in Hoshiarpur city. Archaeological digs at Sanghol, Fatehgarh Sahib, have yielded relics, which date back from Harrapan Culture of 6th century A.D. Govindgarh Fort, Amritsar built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 19th century showcases special defense mechanisms against depredations of the Afghan hordes. Over 250 species of migratory birds fly in Satluj Water Body Wetland, Ropar every year. Its 30 km stretch of crystal clear water is ideal for angling, kayaking, canoeing and boating. Restaurants in Punjab serve specialties like Butter Chicken, Makki di roti and Sarson da saag and lassi.
