It was during the Varmana dynasty that Assam was chronicled in the SI-YUKI, the famed travelogue of Hiuen-Tsang, a Chinese pilgrim. Assam is one of the best destinations where one can encounter a great variety of rare and endangered wildlife. Twenty out of forty one listed endangered species of wildlife are found here including the world famous one horned rhinoceros and other rare species of wildlife on the verge of extinction can be sighted in Kaziranga national park. Assam has been a melting pot of many races, viz. Indo-Burmese, Mongoloid, Austro-Asiatic, Aryan, and Dravidian etc. Ahkhomiya or Assamese is the lingua- Franca of Assam.
