Thailand Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Thailand Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is located some two kilometers away from the township at Damnoen Saduak, Ratchaburi Province, which is about 85 kms southwest of Bangkok. According to history, around 1866 King Rama IV ordered to build a 32 kms long canalbe dug at Damnoen Saduak. The purpose behind the construction of this canal was to form a bridge that would connect the Mae Klong River with the Tacheen River.

An exhilarating narrow long-tailed speedboat ride through the marshes and stilt houses prepares you for this unique market. Locally called “Klong Latphli Floating Market” this amazing destination is always shrouded with noise and color. Every morning farmers and smallholders from the surrounding hills turn up in this market to sell and exchange fruit and vegetables from their heavily-laden barges. The small boats, loaded with fruits and vegetables, cruising up and down the canals amongst the orchards and vineyards presents an eye catching sight. Here mostly the vendor boats are paddled by women with Thai style hats called NGOP. From vegetables and fruit to kitchen gadgets or fresh-cooked noodles or sweets- you will find everything here.

If you are interested in knowing more about the lifestyle of a native Thai, then this is the right place for you. You can hire a boat and start your exploration into the lifestyle of a rural Thai. You can see traditional Thai houses, the way they live and travel by boats, and the traditional way of selling and buying fruits, vegetables, etc.

The Floating Market, approximately 400 metres from the Damonen Saduak District Office, operates every morning till noon. The price to hire a small boat is not fixed; it's around 300-400 baht per boat.
